What is plagiarism ?

According to Mr. Mohd Ikhsan, plagiarism refers to the act of taking an idea, writing or creation of another person and claiming to be proud that it is the result of their own creation.

Plagiarism comes from the Greek word “plagion”. Then, in Latin it is termed as “plagium” which means a kidnapping. In Latin “plagium” change to “plagiarius”. After that, in about early 17th century, the word transform to English word by changing the back words by adding -ism, that turned it to “plagiarism”.

Students’ laziness will be the causes of plagiarism. They doesn’t have an afford to study hard but at the same time want to get a high achievement.

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM

There are many ways to avoid plagiarism. In university, they are policy, manual, and the guidelines for plagiarism. The example of software that help to detect any plagiarism such as ‘ Turnitin ‘. The software help the lectures to detect plagiarism on students assignments. Although, plagiarism is unethic and will get punishments, but usually lectures kindly asks the students to do an assignments again.

Moreover, actually most plagiarism cases can be avoided by citing the original sources. It simply acknowledging that providing your audience necessary information to find certain sources and material that has been borrowed is usually enough to prevent plagiarism.

PREVENTING PLAGIARISM

How to prevent plagiarism?

1. PARAPHRASING

  •          Express the meaning of writers have writen by using different words, especially to achieve greater clarity. It is mean that the sentences is different but the meaning that want to express is still the same. For example, when you have found any information for your research. Then, you read it and put it into your own words, that is paraphrasing. The lecture will notice the student ability and potential to rewrite good sentences by their own way as long as in same meaning.

2. REFERENCING

  • Provide citations of authorities for any book or articles. One of effective ways to avoid plagiarism is citing. Every educational institution or an institution have the document formatting guidelines that issued the research request that every student need to follow. It usually contain the authors and the date of the publication or any similar information. Citing is a very simple thing that every student can do and follow as a guide. In opposite, not citing properly can constitute as plagiarism.

  • The reference can be put at the end of the research paper. Again, must use the document formatting guidelines used by your educational institution. Be specific and follow the direction carefully without careless mistakes.

   Step to Paraphrasing

  •       Reword

Place words by using synonyms. Change a few words that have same meaning, so it will avoid plagiarism and look a bit different from the original sentences.

  •       Rearrange

Change from active to passive and passive to active. It is mean that student should rearrange the word or sentences to make it different from the original but the contain is still not change.

  •       Recheck

Make sure the meaning is same from the original topic. It is mean, that students need to check either the meaning of the word that have change are suitable or not, but the meaning of the whole sentences that want to elaborate and express is still same.

Step to referencing

Another most important ways to avoid plagiarism is referencing. Always cite your source even after changing the ideas a little, if it is unclear whether the idea in your paper really came from you or somewhere else. Others, make sure to be balance between the idea of other sources that taken and your own ideas. It may help you if taking notes of all sources to organize the information and to avoid confusion. Students may clearly distinguish their own ideas that found somewhere else.

When quoting a source, use the quote exactly what you get for any sources that appears. Write down the original and the writer. No one wants to be misquoted. As educational person, you should be able to do and create your own quote. It may takes time, but effort to pay off and it must be done correctly to avoid plagiarism .

Do checking for any plagiarism before submitting you assignment. Refer to your lecturer for the application to check plagiarism like turnitin account to assess your paraphrasing and other anti- plagiarism skills.
